Antonio Conte has become the fourth foreign manager to win the Premier League title during his debut season – the others being Manuel Pellegrini, Carlo Ancelotti and Jose Mourinho – after his Chelsea side beat West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns last night.
Unfortunately for the Italian, however, this is where the hard work truly begins. Indeed, only one foreign manager has successfully defended the Premier League title before and no club has managed it for the last eight years. Perhaps most worryingly of all, five of the last eight title defences have seen the reigning champions sack their manager before the end of the season.
Raising such concerns just days after Chelsea’s title win may seem a tad hyperbolic. But momentum and fortune change so quickly in the Premier League and after such a fantastic first season in the top flight, Conte now lacks the element of surprise. Every team will be out to get Chelsea next season and owner Roman Abramovich is known to lose patience quickly when results stop going his side’s way.
So, Chelsea fans, it’s time to look into your crystal ball. Does Conte have staying power, or will he be axed before the end of 2017/18? Let us know by voting below…
