Was 2016/17 a successful season for Liverpool?
Some would say no. Again the Reds failed to win a single piece of silverware despite not having any European football to contend with. They also had an horrific start to the new year, slipping from genuine title challengers to top four maybes in the space of six weeks.
Some, however would say yes. Jurgen Klopp’s side, for the most part, have produced an entertaining brand of football, and most of the summer signings have paid off. The club have also secured Champions league football for next year, for only the second time in eight seasons.
Whichever way, one thing for certain is that Liverpool need to invest and improve to ensure they can both challenge for the Premier League title and be competitive in Europe next season.
It is no secret either that the Reds are less than reliable at the back, having been unable to find a compatible centre-half partnership capable of winning titles. Two names linked with a move to Anfield are Southampton’s 12-cap Dutchman Virgil van Dijk and Hull City’s Harry Maguire, who is valued at just £2.13million by Transfermarkt.
