Jose Mourinho will have to make moves in the transfer market this summer if he's to transform his sixth-place side into Premier League title challengers in time for next season and a new defensive midfielder appears to be high on his agenda.

According to Manchester Evening News, the Red Devils were keen on Tottenham Hotspur's Eric Dier but fearing a typical reluctance to sell from Daniel Levy, they're now considering Chelsea powerhouse Nemanja Matic as a more attainable alternative.

Mourinho knows the Serbian international well from his second spell at Chelsea, bringing the Benfica midfielder back to Stamford Bridge and winning the 2014/15 Premier League title together.

But Matic hasn't always been able to produce his best form for the Blues and due to turn 29 before the start of next season, he would hardly be a long-term addition for the Red Devils.

With that in mind, we asked United fans last week whether they'd back a summer transfer swoop for Matic and although our poll wasn't exactly conclusive, 51% of those who took part voted against it.

Clearly, United fans think Mourinho should be targeting other enforcers for the summer.
