Liverpool have conceded 16 times in nine games already this season, a rate which surely can’t be maintained if Jurgen Klopp’s side plan on qualifying for the Champions League come the end of May, let alone push for the Premier League title.
But the cause of the Reds’ defensive woes is still somewhat open to debate, so we put the question to Liverpool supporters earlier this week with five potential explanations to choose from.
And according to our poll, 33% think the biggest underlying factor is the absence of an out-and-out holding midfielder at Anfield, which is a rather significant indictment on club captain Jordan Henderson.
A box-to-box midfielder for much of his career, Henderson has operated as Liverpool’s deepest-lying mdifielder in Klopp’s habitual three-man engine room since the start of last season, but Reds fans don’t seem to think he’s been doing a particularly good job.
