It was certainly coming, but after a poor run of 10 Premier League games without a victory – Middlesbrough manager Aitor Karanka has been sacked by the club.
It is certainly a disappointing end to an otherwise impressive tale for the former Real Madrid Assistant Manager, especially when you consider how much he has achieved at the helm.
He earned promotion to the Premier League with the club in 2015/16, after a stellar display in the Championship that season, and looked destined to be the man to ensure the club’s safety in the top flight thereafter.
However, it was not to be – and given how poor the results have been for Boro this season, the dismissal has not come without warning. Currently 19th place in the Premier League, things do not look good.
That brings us on to the particularly interesting topic of who should replace Karanka at Middlesbrough. They are certainly very big shoes to fill, and the new manager will have a tough job on his hands to improve their form this season.
A selection of possible replacements are listed below, but who should Boro pick? Let us know!
