Sunderland remain nine points adrift of safety with only five games remaining of the season ahead of next week’s relegation crunch match against Middlesborough.
The Black Cats travel to the Riverside on Wednesday night knowing that three points would take them level on points with Steve Agnew’s side, who sit only one place above them in the Premier League.
While a win would be a huge boost for David Moyes’ side, Sunderland would still have a huge task on their hands if they are to escape relegation in the final etchings of the season.
If Moyes and co. are to go down they will no doubt have real trouble hanging on to their prized assets, none more so than star striker Jermain Defoe who has come to his club’s rescue over the past two years. The England striker – who recently earned recall onto the international stage and scored upon his England return – has bagged 36 goals over the past two and half seasons with the club.
At 34, the veteran striker is approaching the latter stages of his career, but has more than proven he still has the ability to cut it in the top flight and will no doubt have a host a Prmeier League clubs interested in securing his services this summer.
West Ham have been vocal in their interest for their former striker, as have Bournemouth, whom Defoe also used to play for. Liverpool are the surprise club rumoured to interested in the striker after being urged to sign Defoe by former midfielder Ronnie Whelan.
Of all those clubs linked with him, who do you think he should sign for? Have your say below…
