Derby County have been dealt a double injury blow as Wayne Rooney confirmed that both Andre Wisdom and Beni Baningime are set to miss the Rams’ crucial upcoming Championship fixture.
According to the Derby manager, Wisdom is yet to recover from a groin injury he picked up in the 3-0 loss at Preston North End, while Baningime is sidelined due to a hamstring injury, meaning that both players are likely to miss the clash with Swansea City on Saturday.
As cited by Derbyshire Live, Rooney said: “I don’t think there will be any players back. There are no new injuries from the game on Saturday, so the squad will be the same.”
As such, Derby will also be without Lee Gregory, Teden Mengi, Jack Stretton, Curtis Davies and Krystian Bielik, in addition to the two aforementioned players.
So far this season, Wisdom has been a regular part of the Derby defence, with the 27-year-old featuring in 38 Championship fixtures for the Rams. In those games, he has helped his side to keep 10 clean sheets, as well as making an average of one interception, 0.7 tackles and 3.2 clearances per game, culminating in an average SofaScore match rating of 6.76.
Meanwhile, Baningime – who is on loan from Everton – has featured in just two league games since his arrival back in February, with the 22-year-old making an average of 0.5 key passes and taking 0.5 shots per game, earning an average SofaScore match rating of 6.85.
As such, the absence of both players is likely to come as unwelcome news to Rooney, whose side must leave the Liberty Stadium with all three points on Saturday in order to give themselves the best chance of securing their Championship survival.
With a potentially seismic clash against relegation rivals Sheffield Wednesday coming up on the final day of the season, the 35-year-old will undoubtedly be praying for the duo to make a speedy return to action, especially if Derby’s fate is still unresolved going into that clash at Pride Park next week.
