This year’s EUROs marks the first time Wales have qualified, despite their storied history of producing world-class footballers. But merely qualifying won’t make this campaign a successful one.
A ferocious attack and talented backline should captivate the Welsh faithful, and for good reason. Gareth Bale is clearly on of the world’s finest players, with his breathtaking pace, improvisation around the box and finishing ability making him a truly elite player.
But relying too heavily on Bale, much like Portugal have done with Cristiano Ronaldo, could have a negative effect on the squad – he scored seven of the team’s 11 goals in qualifying rounds. Wales have plenty of additional playmakers, including Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsey, Crystal Palace’s Joe Ledley, Leicester City midfielder Andy King and Sam Vokes.
In one of the most intriguing draws of the tournament, Wales finds themselves in a grouping with England, Russia and Slovakia. A much anticipated match-up with neighbours England marks the first time the squads will battle in a major competition.
Only time will tell if Wales’ talent will overcome their inexperience.
Anyway, here are FIVE Welsh stars to keep an eye on…
