The search for Everton’s next manager has been developing rapidly over the last few days, with Vitor Pereira interviewed and Frank Lampard reported to be favourite for the job, and now an update has emerged on Pereira’s position in the fight for the role at Goodison Park.
Everton insider, Alan Myers, has dropped a two-word update on the manager search at the club right now and has revealed a claim on the recently sacked former Fenerbahce manager, Pereira.
Myers responded to a fan who asked if the 53-year-old had been ruled out of the job yet, simply tweeting:
Pereira travelled to Merseyside on Monday to meet with Farhad Moshiri and the Everton board for an interview and continues to be in contention for the job.
Yesterday, the Portuguese manager went live on Sky Sports News to discuss his position and his thoughts on the current situation at Everton, which was met with fury from the fans, who have taken to social media to scathe his decision to speak about the club on TV, with one fan tweeting:
“@Everton whoever advised Pereira to share his interview thinking it would get the fans on side, shows how out of touch they are with football and fans. Also shows Pereira as yet another puppet on a string and incapable of making his own decisions.”
The Toffees fans didn’t stop at social media, as many went out to Goodison Park on Wednesday night to protest against the owners, and against the potential appointment of Pereira, with an image being posted on social media of a spray-painted message on the wall of the stadium saying ‘Pereira Out, Lampard in.’
Fans will be fuming that the former Porto manager hasn’t been officially ruled out, and the fact that there is clearly still a chance for him to take the job at Goodison Park. We don’t blame them either, with the Portuguese sacked in two of his previous roles.
Moshiri will need to be careful in his decision, as the anger that the fans are displaying couldn’t get much worse and he must work to not only provide the club with the right manager to turn around their abysmal season, but also make sure that he can offer someone to the supporters that they can get behind and believe in.
It’s evident Pereira isn’t that person.
