With electrifying pace and the ability to beat a man, it was largely thought that the goals and assists would soon come to turn him into a very impressive winger for the division.
However, as the weeks go by and he continues to not only struggle, with one goal in his last eight games, but often leave his full-back exposed with a lack of work ethic too, perhaps now Frank Lampard must make a decision.
With only one of Demarai Gray or Dwight McNeil to take his spot, there is a startling lack of depth on the wings given the departure of Richarlison over the summer.
Therefore, he could once again look to Finch Farm in the hopes it might have his very own young star to mould as he sees fit.
Of the current crop, Stanley Mills is the outstanding wide candidate.
He has even captained his youth side, which he could soon shed to bolster the senior squad’s ranks.
Certainly deserving of a call up, the son of former Leeds man Danny Mills has been a star performer for a stellar Toffees U21s outfit.
So much so that Lampard himself took note of the potential for this masterful Mills campaign to occur, stating in an interview with The Athletic: “The reason Stan’s here is that he trained really well. One day we were looking for a player for training and the staff mentioned Stan. I know Danny, so had wanted to see Stan anyway. Straight away you could see he had talent and character. He brings energy and cover.”
This came just before the youngster joined them on their tour of the US.
To think that the manager already has him on his radar, despite his youth, suggests big things might be coming for him very soon.
Should Gordon continue to let his side down the way he has been lately, Mills’ chance might even come sooner than he thinks.
