Everton linked with Brennan Johnson transfer swoop

Having only managed to win one of their previous 11 Premier League games, the upcoming January transfer window could give Everton the chance to strengthen their squad and put them in a good shape to put their poor run of form behind them and attack the second half of the campaign.

One player that could come in next month and revitalise Rafa Benitez’s side is 20-year-old attacking-midfielder Brennan Johnson, who Everton are reportedly interested in signing from Championship club Nottingham Forest alongside Newcastle United and West Ham United.

As a product of Forest’s youth system, Johnson made his senior debut for the club back in August 2019 under former manager Sabri Lamouchi in a 2-1 defeat against West Bromwich Albion.

Labelled as an “unbelievable” player in the past by Lamouchi, Johnson has made 31 appearances for Forest across all competitions.

In September last year, Johnson joined Lincoln City in what ended up being a very successful loan deal where he managed to score 13 goals and provide 14 assists in 48 appearances in total.

This season has seen the youngster rack up five goals and four assists for Forest in 23 Championship appearances, taking his tally to 18 senior strikes. He’s also played across a number of different midfield and attacking positions, highlighting his versatility and talent in front of goal, which is probably why he has caught the interest of the likes of Everton, West Ham and Newcastle.

In terms of a potential move to Everton in January, with James Rodriguez having left the club in September, Johnson could be the ideal replacement for the Colombian as a versatile attacking-midfield player given how Rodriguez managed to score six goals and provide nine assists during his brief stint at Goodison Park.

Although, given Johnson’s young age, it could be safe to assume that he could be at Everton for a lot longer than Rodriguez was if he manages to impress Benitez if he does join in January.

Moving forward, Everton should definitely do all they can to sign Johnson in January.

As an exciting young prospect, he could flourish at the Merseyside club in the Premier League and bring some positive vibes in a similar way Demarai Gray has by scoring five goals and providing two assists in 16 Premier League games this term.
