Everton have been through five failed managers since the arrival of Farhad Moshiri in 2016, with Frank Lampard the sixth and current manager to take on the challenging rollercoaster role at Goodison Park.

Roberto Martinez, Ronald Koeman, Sam Allardyce, Marco Silva, Carlo Ancelotti and Rafa Benitez have all had the opportunity to take Everton to the next level over the last six years, not forgetting interim managers David Unsworth and Duncan Ferguson, and most met a sticky end to their Toffees career whilst Ancelotti went onto bigger things with Real Madrid.

Whilst most of the managers were met with a warm welcome and fair expectation at Goodison Park, there was one managerial selection that was doomed from the day of conception as legendary Liverpool boss Benitez took the reigns of his former club's bitter rivals in the summer of 2021.

The appointment was not met with the most friendly reception and the Spanish manager struggled to prove he was able to put Everton in a good position to compete in the Premier League with a 31.82% win percentage and just 1.18 points taken from his 22 games in charge, causing protests and pitch invasions from supporters.

Benitez was relieved of his duties just six months into his tenure at Everton during the January transfer window leading to the most recent appointment of former Chelsea boss Frank Lampard, but what if Farhad Moshiri had put his confidence in another manager before bringing Benitez into the Merseyside outfit?

Christophe Galtier was one of the managers linked with a move to Goodison Park last summer, but it was revealed by The Athletic that the powers at the club snubbed the opportunity to snap up the now Paris Saint-Germain boss due to his lack of fluency in the English language.

Galtier, who now boasts a squad that includes Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, had impressively just won Ligue 1 with Lille, breaking the status quo in the French top-flight where PSG had won seven of the last nine league titles when his name was put in the hat for the Everton job.

The decision not to hire the Frenchman who was dubbed "intelligent" by Marco Verratti will surely be one that Moshiri regrets in hindsight with the manager tallying up a 90.9% win ratio in Paris from his first 11 games in charge. He has won ten and drawn one as he remains unbeaten in all competitions including the Champions League.

With that being said, it will now remain just a wonder of what Galtier could've achieved if he had been brought to Goodison instead of Benitez last year. However, Moshiri will be hoping that Lampard will be able to steer the Toffees in the right direction over the season ahead and his decision won't have been made in vain.
