Everton lost their third consecutive Premier League game last night when they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United at St James' Park, and Frank Lampard will surely be feeling extremely frustrated with this team.

The Toffees by no means struggled to stay in the game against Eddie Howe's side, especially in the second half when they had 58% possession, completing more accurate passes (314 v 304) and more dribbles (44% v 22%) overall.

Despite all of these positives, Everton did not register a single shot on target throughout the clash and the team's goal-shy approach to games this season is starting to become a serious problem for Lampard, with Nottingham Forest, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Aston Villa only scoring fewer goals so far.

Miguel Almiron found the back of the net in the 30th minute of the first half to deliver Newcastle their opener and eventually the winner as Everton failed to impose any attacking threat or creativity in the final third over the uninspiring and frankly dull 90-minute performance.

Indeed, Everton supporters would have been excited to see Dominic Calvert-Lewin make his first start of the season last night after struggling with injury issues over the last few months, but the striker didn't deliver the positive impact in front of goal that would've been highly anticipated.

In fact, Calvert-Lewin only further exposed the goal-scoring problems Everton are currently facing with his performance in the North East last night.

The 25-year-old ace lost the ball every 1.8 touches, completed just six accurate passes, lost 80% of his duels, made no key passes, had no shots on target, no dribble attempts and was offside a worrying three times.

It's difficult to entirely place the blame on the returning goal machine as he is now not only without his strike partner Richarlison, but has also suffered with numerous fitness problems over the last 12 months so is unlikely to be completely match fit and in form.

However, the Everton star's poor performance against Newcastle only highlights how important it was for the powers at Goodison Park to sign a clinical striker who can offer many goal contributions in Calvert-Lewin's absence, something they did not achieve during the transfer window.

With that being said, Lampard must find the solution to unleashing the aggressive attacking threat and clinical finishing that Everton are crying out for as they are now just one point shy of the relegation zone ahead of their clash with Crystal Palace this weekend.
