Everton eye swoop for Georginio Wijnaldum

Everton have been given the green light to make a move for Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum as Frank Lampard aims to strengthen the Toffees’ midfield.

What’s the news?

According to 90min, PSG will allow the Netherlands international to leave the club this summer despite having two years left on his contract.

The report claimed that a loan move would be most likely, with Everton keeping close tabs on the situation alongside other Premier League outfits in Wolves, West Ham and Leicester City.

The Dutchman moved to Liverpool for £25m in 2016 and enjoyed a fruitful spell at Anfield before leaving on a free transfer to join the Ligue 1 giants a year ago.

Wijnaldum could be “unreal” for Everton

Everton have made a solid start to their transfer business this summer, reportedly securing the services of James Tarkowski on a free transfer when his Burnley contract expires, and Lampard isn’t finished there.

A move for Wijnaldum would be contentious given his spell at Liverpool, but if the Toffees manager wishes to vastly improve his team, a move for the PSG maestro should be high on his list of priorities.

Journalist Max Rushden has previously described the player as “unreal”, while the 31-year-old’s former manager Jurgen Klopp dubbed him “sensational”, and his statistics over his five years at Anfield justify the praise.

Wijnaldum scored 22 goals and registered 16 assists in 237 appearances for Liverpool as he became a key component in Klopp’s team during a successful period for the club.

Which club did Everton sign Josh King from in the 2021 Jan transfer window?

The Dutchman’s last season at Liverpool saw him complete 93% of his passes and 67% of his dribbles, while he also contributed defensively by winning 0.7 interceptions and 0.6 tackles per match.

Lampard urgently needs some bite and composure in the midfield, and Wijnaldum fits the bill perfectly.

Signing the 31-year-old, even on loan, could be the catalyst for the Toffees to bounce back from a terrible season last time around and bring better times back to Goodison Park.
