Everton: Anthony Gordon shines for Lampard against Leeds

Everton have collected their first Premier League win of 2022 and their first win in seven top-flight games against Leeds United today with a fantastic team performance at Goodison Park.

Frank Lampard’s side put three goals past their opponents, with Michael Keane, Seamus Coleman and Anthony Gordon all finding the back of the net over the course of the game, and it’s fair to say that Everton dominated throughout.

Leeds barely turned up against the home side, completely lacking in creativity with zero shots on target. Despite having 58% possession over the course of the afternoon, the Whites were there for the taking, with Lampard’s side capitalising on that with aplomb.

The Toffees had more shots on target and created more big chances, which ultimately led to a comfortable win, and there was one player who must take a large chunk of the praise for the team’s performance and important result this afternoon.

Local lad Anthony Gordon understood the assignment when it came to the must-win game for Everton, and he clearly took it personally with the Toffees teetering on the edge of a relegation battle by putting in an outstanding performance to ensure that his team didn’t fall further into trouble.

The third goal was credited to the youngster, who got a touch to the ball from Richarlison’s shot and was duly awarded his third goal of the season.

According to SofaScore, the 20-year-old gem – who was hailed as “creative” by Everton journalist David Prentice – was an attacking force today, fully taking advantage of his 47 touches and claiming the highest rating on the pitch (8.8).

The youngster not only scored and set up a goal, he was successful with 100% of his dribbles and made four tackles and one interception during his 81 minutes on the pitch, offering both outstanding offensive and defensive attributes before he was called back to the bench in place of Anwar El Ghazi, who gained his Everton debut today.

Lampard will be absolutely over the moon with the result against Leeds, as a win pulls them further away from the relegation zone, and he will be especially delighted with how young Gordon came to the fore during a pivotal match for his team this afternoon.
