Everton: Frank Lampard must unleash James Garner

Everton completed some impressive business over the summer window, with the Toffees being in the market right up until the final hours of deadline day.

The Toffees got permanent deals for Paris Saint Germain’s Idrissa Gana Gueye and Manchester United’s James Garner over the line before the transfer window slammed shut on Thursday, making it eight new addition for Frank Lampard this summer.

Now, the 44-year-old has the job of determining who will become his first-team regulars at Goodison Park, and one player who looks as if could make a huge impact is 21-year-old Garner.

The former Manchester United starlet – who was hailed a “raw talent” by journalist Rich Fay – was signed up to Lampard’s project for £15m and, when you consider his influence in the centre of the pitch for Nottingham Forest in the Championship last season, this could prove a major coup for the Toffees.

Over 41 appearances for Forest last season, the youngster scored four goals, delivered eight assists and created seven big chances for his teammates, as well as making an average of two key passes, 1.8 tackles, 1.4 interceptions and winning the majority of his duels (53%) per game – proving that he is a complete midfielder who offers almost everything.

Firstly, where did Everton finish in the Premier League?

In fact, the Everton boss could form an imperious young duo by teaming up Garner with fellow newcomer Amadou Onana, who was extremely impressive in the team’s 0-0 draw with Liverpool in the Merseyside derby on Saturday.

Onana is an incredibly solid defensive midfielder, making an average of 1.4 interceptions, 1.8 tackles and winning 3.9 duels over five appearances so far. As such, giving him a midfield partner who can not only work alongside him to win the ball in the midfield but also progress it further would be an absolute nightmare for their opponents.

Should James Garner start for Everton?

With that being said, the signing of Garner should not be one that is wasted and Lampard must find a place for him in the team as soon as possible, as his talents could be a huge boost for the team in their challenge to have a much more comfortable and improved season in the top flight.
