Everton: Lampard reveals Yerry Mina injury setback

Everton make the trip to north London this weekend to take on Tottenham Hotspur, and Frank Lampard has revealed another injury blow to his team ahead of the clash.

What’s the latest?

The Toffees manager took to his pre-match press conference to reveal an injury setback to centre-back Yerry Mina, who will not be available for the game on Saturday evening.

Lampard told the media: “Yerry had a little bit of a setback with a small calf injury this week so won’t be available.”

Lampard should be frustrated

There is no doubt that Lampard will be frustrated with Mina’s constant battles with fitness and injury issues, as the player has suffered numerous setbacks over the last 12 months which contributed to Everton’s struggles last season.

The 28-year-old has only managed one Premier League game this season after being included in the starting line-up against Chelsea in the opening match of the campaign, when he came off the pitch injured after 70 minutes.

Last season, Mina only made 13 league appearances out of a possible 38, spending 101 days sidelined with thigh and hamstring injuries, which were hugely detrimental to the depth of the defence in the Everton squad during their relegation scrap.

Yet again, it seems that the Columbian cannot be relied upon to give Lampard the depth in the defensive positions where Conor Coady and James Tarkowski have been playing consistently, giving the Everton manager little opportunity to rest either of the two centre-backs and further risking the lack of quality required on the bench this season.

Furthermore, Mina is currently earning £120k-per-week and is the highest earner at Goodison Park, meaning that his lack of contribution and weeks spent on the injury table is costing the club a fortune with little to no return on their investment in the player.

Firstly, where did Everton finish in the Premier League?

Although Coady and Tarkowski are excelling in their new roles in the team, having plenty of squad depth is still essential for the Toffees to comfortably compete this season, and Lampard will surely be hoping that Mina’s latest setback won’t last long as the fixtures come thick and fast in the weeks ahead.
