Everton struck gold with James Tarkowski

Everton will be hoping they have done enough over the summer transfer window to improve their team and bolster the squad at Goodison Park to improve their performances and finish in the Premier League this season.

After struggling last season in a disappointing relegation battle that saw the side only retain their top-flight status in the penultimate game of the season, Frank Lampard would have worked hard over the summer to identify players who can provide consistency and quality in equal measure.

Firstly, where did Everton finish in the Premier League?

One of the biggest concerns over the last campaign was the defence in the team with the side conceding 66 Premier League goals and losing 21 games in total, which was contributed to by a number of injury issues sustained by players in the back-line.

As a result, the club needed to make all the right moves to improve the defence and there was one player they struck gold with this summer that could be the solution to some of their problems from last season.

James Tarkowski joined Everton on a free transfer from Burnley and has already been setting the perfect example in Lampard’s team, showing off his leadership skills that have resulted in the team going unbeaten in their last four Premier League games, albeit all draws.

The 29-year-old centre-back has been consistently featured in all six of Everton’s outings so far, making two interceptions, one tackle and 5.5 clearances per game, as well as winning 69% of his aerial duels and taking 53.7 touches per game, proving that he is a dominant presence in his position.

Tarkowski, who was hailed “terrific” by his former boss Sean Dyche, has also drawn high praise from his new manager upon his arrival at Goodison Park:

“There’s a great physicality to him. He’s great in both boxes, really good on the ball which is something that can hopefully really add to our game in our build and how we want to play,” claimed Lampard.

Was Tarkowski the Everton signing of the summer?

With that being said, the signing of the former Burnley centre-back could be one of the best pieces of business Everton has done in a while if they can not only improve their performances consistently over the season but end the campaign with a much more comfortable finish.
