When Everton signed Davy Klaassen back in the summer of 2017 for a reported £23.6m, it was seen as a real coup on the part of the Toffees.

After all, this was a midfielder who was captain of Ajax, aged just 24, had scored 49 goals, and won three Eredivisie titles since making his debut for the Dutch side in 2011.

It was no surprise that then Everton boss Ronald Koeman waxed lyrical about the 16-cap Netherlands international when confirmation arose of his signing.

He said: "He is a player who is only 24 but has a lot of experience and is a leader on the pitch. He has already captained Ajax for two seasons and that shows you the type of person he is. He is hardworking, likes to press and, of course, will give us more creativity and goals."

Sadly for the Merseyside club, none of what Koeman so proudly talked about came to fruition.

Klaassen endured a miserable spell at Goodison Park that saw him make just 16 appearances for the club. He scored no goals whatsoever and registered just one solitary assist, playing just 820 minutes of football in total.

Koeman of course splashed out big money that summer including signing the likes of Jordan Pickford for £25m, and Gylfi Sigurdsson for around £45m.

Did he play for Everton? Simple question but a lot tougher than you think...

But with the moves for Wayne Rooney and Sigurdsson too, the Toffees had an abundance of options to play in that number ten role, but no-one to actually replace Romelu Lukaku who left Goodison Park to join Manchester United.

It was the kind of illogical transfer approach that symbolised Koeman and his nightmare spell on Merseyside. Klaassen's struggles epitomised that to a tee, and it was no surprise that both of them didn't last very long in the end.

Meanwhile, Everton must avoid swooping for ace who is just another Tom Davies.
