Everton have made a string of mistakes when it comes to new arrivals, with over 40 signings made since Farhad Moshiri took ownership of the club six years ago, and since then they have made no progress even after spending over £500m on players and appointing six managers over that time.

The club has now found themselves struggling to keep their heads above water in the Premier League table, with the side currently just four points off the relegation zone, sitting in 16th, and there is no doubt that mistakes of the past have now caught up with them.

The most recent disaster was appointing Rafa Benitez as the manager, which was not a welcomed appointment in the first place, due to his strong connection to Liverpool, where he managed the Merseyside rivals and won the Champions League.

During his six months in charge the Spanish boss made some questionable decisions, whilst failing to keep Everton inside the top half of the table after a good start. He only registered five wins for the Toffees and got rid of two key players in the team with James Rodriguez and Lucas Digne both moving on.

Ultimately after a string of awful performances and poor decision making the fans turned on the manager, protesting during games and a supporter even attempted to approach the manager at Carrow Road, which turned out to be his final match in charge.

One decision the former manager made, will now be something Everton rue, as Rodriguez admitted this week that he never wanted to leave the club, in quotes shared by Fabrizio Romano, the player said;

"I would have liked to have been at Everton for much longer.

"It’s a spectacular club, the fans are incredible, but I ran into a coach who didn’t want to count on me. I wanted to be there."

The £13.5m-rated gem was barely given a chance to shine at the club, but when he did play he was highly impressive, with Rodriguez hailed "extraordinary" by former Real Madrid striker Fernando Morientes.

Making 26 appearances, the attacking midfielder scored six goals and assisted his Everton teammates nine times during his time at the club, which is a higher output than any player in the Everton team this season so far, so his departure would likely be something that Moshiri must regret, as his attacking threat would make a huge difference in the current team if these statistics are anything to go by.

It remains to be seen if new signing Dele Alli will make an impact on the side, but Rodriguez was already a proven player in the team and boasts a better trophy haul and pedigree at the top level than the Englishman.

The Colombian clearly had a great connection with his teammates, which reflects in his high number of assists in his limited game time, and the club could have saved millions on the risk of signing a new player who could prove ineffective in the team, when they already had an effective player in Rodriguez.
