Everton will have welcomed the World Cup-enforced break given their run of form, with pressure having mounted on Frank Lampard as his side lost their last three games as the Toffees were dumped out of the cup sitting just a point from the relegation zone.

This six-week hiatus from domestic football has allowed the Merseyside club to capitalise on their infamy across the world, and with their recent tour to Australia having now concluded, it must be branded a huge success.

Not only will it have boosted the club’s marketability within that region, but the display in the second game particularly will have pleased Frank Lampard.

Seeing them record five goals against Western Sydney Wanderers is especially promising given how this season they have scored just 11 times in 15 Premier League games.

Whilst Anthony Gordon might steal the headlines for his showstopping hat trick, two standout youngsters were handed the final 25 minutes to take their chance.

Just two minutes after their introduction, it was they who combined to notch their fourth goal of the game.

Stanley Mills’ driving run and quick feet saw his left-footed shot spilt, and Tom Cannon was on hand to power home from close range.

The striker in particular will feel like this is a turning point in his career, as he scored his first senior goal for his boyhood club.

With the well-documented striker issues faced by Everton, this goal could force his way into Lampard’s thinking once the Premier League restarts on Boxing Day.

Although Dominic Calvert-Lewin is their undisputed star striker, his injury issues have rendered him an unreliable asset for consistent goals.

His deputy Neal Maupay has also disappointed, and although he headed in the opener, his average SofaScore rating of 6.59 this season proves why he too cannot be trusted for goals either.

There is little risk therefore in perhaps unleashing the 19-year-old marksman who was labelled a pure “goalscorer” by Paul Tait.

He already boasts nine goals and two assists in just 13 youth games this season, following up his fine eight-goal haul last season too.

Having scored goals at every level now, fans would surely prefer seeing an academy graduate handed a chance over those who have disappointed them before.

The Evertonians have always had a keen affiliation with those who have graduated through their youth system, and this could be no different. He would certainly garner a more staunch backing than some of his competition has received.
