Everton have had a hard time with injuries over the last 12 months tallying up the worst injury record in the Premier League last season and now a new update has emerged that will be a blow for the Toffees.

What's the latest?

It has been revealed by the Everton official website that Tom Davies has picked up an injury in a training session in Australia ahead of the club's scheduled friendlies in the Sydney Super Cup.

The club released a statement in the early hours of this morning:

'Midfielder Tom Davies has sustained a knee injury during a training session in Sydney and will leave Everton’s tour of Australia to be assessed in the UK.'

'The midfielder will undergo a scan to discover the full extent of the injury before being treated by Club medical staff at Finch Farm.'

It will be frustrating for Lampard

There is no doubt that Frank Lampard will be frustrated with the news that Davies has suffered an injury, especially when he has key midfielders at the World Cup over the month ahead.

Both Idrissa Gana Gueye and Amadou Onana will be representing their respective nations in the prestigious international tournament and the Everton boss will now have to hope that the pair don't pick up any injuries over the next few weeks, although it's likely that they will both come back fatigued if they make it to the latter stages.

Everton face Wolverhampton Wanderers on Boxing Day just eight days after the World Cup final so Lampard will surely be hoping that the pair can recover quickly upon their arrival back in the UK, depending on where Belgium and Senegal finish in the competition.

The Toffees are in desperate need of crucial points when they return to action as they are currently just one point shy of the relegation zone and the 44-year-old manager will need to inspire his team to provide better performances in the second half of the campaign if they don't want to face a similar or worse fate than last season.

With that being said, the injury to Davies will be a worry for Lampard in terms of the midfield depth. However, he should have enough quality to field reliable talent in the centre of the pitch after Christmas.
