In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, Rob Lee, who made 280 Premier League appearances, insists James Rodriguez doesn't deserve a new contract at Everton after failing to impress this season.

There have been reports claiming the Toffees are eager to offer the former Real Madrid midfielder a new deal to keep him at Goodison Park despite only joining the club last year.

Rodriguez signed as a free agent last summer but injuries have not allowed him to showcase his talent consistently - though he has still managed to score six goals and register nine assists. Given the profile of the player, however, you could understand why some may feel the Colombian isn't having a breathtaking season.

Speaking on why Rodriguez doesn't deserve a new contract and why a new deal doesn't make sense for Everton, Lee told FFC:

"He's only been there a year so I don't know why they would give him a new contract and will there be loads of clubs wanting him after the season he's had? He's been really good sometimes and then not great other times.

"I don't understand football clubs but he's obviouslyvery good player. If I was the club I'd be telling him to play well next season and we'll reward you with a new contract."

Carlo Ancelotti signed the £90,000-per-week midfielder for both Bayern Munich and Real Madrid so he clearly trusts the player to produce on the pitch and carry out a job for him.

Everton are still in contention for a European spot but it is likely to only be a Europa League place as their form has tailed off in the second half of the season, having won just one home league game since the turn of the year.
