Lampard may unearth his own Frenkie de Jong at Everton in Isaac Price

During Everton’s 2-0 victory at Goodison Park against Boreham Wood in the FA Cup on Thursday, Frank Lampard dropped the first hints at which players from the youth teams he views to be potential first-team players in the future by handing them appearances on the night.

Lewis Dobbin and Reece Welch both came off the bench late on for the Toffees, as did Isaac Price. The latter is currently in the middle of an international tussle between Northern Ireland and England, having represented both at youth team levels, but he is also eligible for selection by Germany.

A “composed and assured presence” in midfield, despite playing for just one minute on Thursday, the 18-year-old completed all three of his passes and has already identified a player he would like to emulate as his career progresses.

Can Isaac Price become an Everton star?

“I’d say my athleticism, passing and awareness are my main strengths,” said Price in an interview for the official Everton website.

“I like to play little clever balls around the corner and help to set up attacks. But there is still a lot I need to work on and many things I need to get better sat.

“My preferred position is probably at number eight, where I can go forward, try to get in the box, but also contribute in the defensive side of the game as well.

“Frenkie de Jong is definitely someone I look up to. I like his composure on the ball and how he gets away from players. He’s always relaxed and picks out good passes – and he scores goals, too.”

Lampard himself would have fitted the description given by Price, and as such will most likely be very excited about having the opportunity to develop him further. The 43-year-old could potentially give the teenager more first team opportunities towards the end of the season should Everton secure their Premier League status for at least another year.

The Chelsea legend has a proven track record of giving chances to younger players in order to develop them for his own team, like Mason Mount and Reece James, or turn them into sellable assets, as he did with Fikayo Tomori and Marc Guehi.

However, with the likes of Allan not living up to expectation after big-money moves, it certainly seems a possibility that Price will be seen as a future mainstay in the position, rather than just being nurtured for the Toffees to sell on at a profit.

If the 18-year-old can go on to become a £63m-rated superstar like his Dutch idol, Everton will have a serious prospect on their hands.
