Everton have spent an obscene amount of money over Farhad Moshiri’s reign, with the Iranian entrusting huge transfer war chests to managers who have unsurprisingly turned out to be duds.

His biggest mistake was allowing Ronald Koeman not only to have the bulk of his money but to allow him to seemingly spearhead recruitment.

This resulted in devastating mediocrity entering Goodison Park, such as Cuco Martina and Ashley Williams.

However, it was actually Morgan Schneiderlin who proved to be one of his biggest disappointments, as he reunited with the Frenchman who had underwhelmed at Manchester United.

The 32-year-old had featured just 47 times for the Red Devils over a two-year period, yet the Dutch manager still saw fit to unload £24m for his services. This ultimately backfired heavily.

He would stay at Goodison Park for three miserable seasons, where they would see little return. Schneiderlin featured 87 times for the Merseyside outfit, scoring just once and assisting two more.

Despite being a capable defensive option, his decision to rarely progress the play forward drew frustration from the fans. He was capable but did not offer enough defensively to not contribute at all to the offence.

This was made even more frustrating with how he had played at Southampton in the past, where he would break play up and drive with the ball, only to show his quality in the final third with a shot or a pass. Indeed, he scored 15 times and assisted 11 in 261 St Mary's performances.

On one of many occasions where he underperformed in Royal Blue, journalist Phil McNulty dubbed the midfielder “shocking” in an “embarrassing” Everton side back in 2017.

It is a testament to his dwindling talent and awful form that OGC Nice only had to spend £2m to see him return to his homeland. The Toffees were more than happy to oversee a 92% loss on him, just to get him off the wage bill.

Whilst Koeman made plenty of high-profile mistakes whilst in the Goodison Park hot seat, this romantic decision to return one of his former players to his side backfired severely, and it is largely his transfer misdeeds which the club are still paying for today from a financial point of view.
