Everton: Tete is a huge Anthony Gordon upgrade

Everton continue to be linked with exciting wide men, as Kevin Thelwell’s search for safety continues…

What’s the latest?

That’s according to talkSPORT, where Alex Crook writes of the Toffees’ intrigue in Brazilian winger Tete.

Whilst he notes Nottingham Forest as the main club involved in a potential deal, Frank Lampard’s side are referenced alongside Wolverhampton Wanderers as showing interest in his signature.

The 22-year-old reportedly is keen to leave Shakhtar Donetsk this month permanently, having moved to Lyon on loan following the Russian invasion.

Gordon upgrade

It is no secret that Anthony Gordon has been disappointing of late for his boyhood club.

The 21-year-old burst onto the scene last season and offered a brief flash of excitement as an academy graduate become a first-team starter.

With electrifying pace and quick feet, he was a refreshing addition that added four goals and two assists to a Premier League campaign that saw them narrowly secure safety.

However, given that the club’s troubles have not ceased, more has been demanded of the youngster, which he has not delivered.

Having started the season in solid fashion, he has since scored just one goal in his last ten league games, and as such has only started once in the club’s last five games.

When battling relegation, a team cannot stay up on decent performances or neat tricks alone. They demand goals, and with Gordon, they seem unlikely to get them.

Would you take Tete at Everton?

Therefore, the addition of Tete could be a huge step towards safety, with the 22-year-old having netted six times and assisted three more in just 16 Ligue 1 appearances.

This return serves to supplement his 12-goal and seven-assist haul from the season prior too, with his parent club labelling the Brazilian “a real hurricane” on their Twitter account.

Having established himself as a consistent goal threat, ranking in the top 17% for non-penalty goals, he dwarfs the output of Everton’s ‘starboy’.

When compared to other wingers in Europe, Gordon can only muster 0.18 non-penalty goals and 0.04 assists per 90, via FBref.

First up on the quiz: after what match was Rafa Benitez sacked?

During a time of immense need, as they sit adrift in the relegation zone, Lampard is crying out for tangible quality.

Tete offers this in abundance, whereas his current right winger, unfortunately, does not.
