Everton midfielder Amadou Onana has been approached by Chelsea this month but is unsure about leaving the Toffees in a relegation scrap.

What's the latest?

A number of players are being linked with a potential departure from Goodison Park with Anthony Gordon a player who is being strongly linked with a possible exit this month.

And according to Foot Mercato, the Belgian midfielder is one of the players who the London giants have approached this month as they aim to bolster Graham Potter's squad.

And speaking on his YouTube channel, journalist Fabrizio Romano has confirmed Chelsea's interest in the 21-year-old but has provided Everton fans with some cause for optimism:

"It's important to say that it's true that what was reported in France by Foot Mercato that they [Chelsea] tried to sign Amadou Onana from Everton.

"They had an approach with Everton and with the player, but at the moment, not easy at all because the player at the moment is not 100% keen on leaving the club in a difficult situation."

Here to fight for Everton's safety

With local lad Gordon being linked away with a move from Everton at such a difficult time in the club's history, it will surely be refreshing to hear these comments from Romano.

After all, Gordon has now skipped multiple days of training at Finch Farm amid the speculation linking him with a move to Newcastle United.

However, Onana is seemingly wanting to remain at Goodison Park and be a big part of Everton's scrap for survival with just goal difference keeping them off the foot of the table at present.

The Belgian has only been an Everton player for a handful of months after making a fairly big-money move in the summer from Ligue 1 side Lille.

He has played a big role in Everton's Premier League campaign thus far with 16 starts under Frank Lampard alongside a further two appearances off the bench (via Transfermarkt).

Onana has been able to return a goal and assist across those appearances, however, it is his defensive work which the Toffees paid the money for.

And he has fared fairly well in that department with an average of almost three tackles per game as well as one interception per 90 minutes (via FBref).

Perhaps surprisingly - given their league position - the Toffees are able to boast a pretty healthy defensive record with only three more goals conceded than Manchester United.

And if they are to remain in the Premier League, that record is going to have to continue and it is apparent Onana could play a big role in providing a sturdy defence to whoever the next manager may be.
