Everton managed to keep hold of Anthony Gordon after Chelsea heavily pursued the winger this summer, although a reliable source has given a fresh update on the player's future ahead of the winter transfer window.

What's the latest?

According to i News' northern football correspondent Mark Douglas, Newcastle could make a move for the 21-year-old when the transfer window reopens in January.

In a piece written for i News, Douglas claims that the Magpies could revive their interest in the young talent with a new and improved bid in a few months' time after their £30m offer was laughed off this summer.

Lampard would be devastated

There is no doubt that Lampard would be devastated to lose one of his most important players and promising talents in the team, with the manager voicing his admiration of the boyhood Evertonian.

The former Chelsea boss spoke out last month when Gordon's future was hanging in the balance, lavishing his player with praise as he said (via The Independent): "He’s not a robot and all this attention is difficult. I understand that, I was that ambitious young player."

“That’s the beauty of Anthony. Hard-working. He wants to be better. He wants to do what he did (on Saturday), which is score goals, run for this team, and that’s why he’s a delight to work with."

The manager's loyalty to the Toffees winger is unrivalled despite the difficult relegation battle last season, with Gordon featuring in every single Premier League game that Lampard has managed since joining the club in January, proving that the 44-year-old implicitly trusts the player to deliver.

The £60m-valued star, who was dubbed a "special talent" by talkSPORT pundit Tony Cascarino, has already been a standout performer in the Everton team this season, scoring two goals in six matches so far while making one key pass, winning two tackles and landing 2.2 shots on target per game.

His performances have earned him a WhoScored rating of 6.79 so far this term, ranking him fifth in the Toffees' squad, a clear indicator of his importance to the cause.

Lampard and the powerbrokers at Goodison Park must do everything that they can to keep Gordon at Everton beyond the winter transfer window, as it could have a big impact on their pursuit to avoid another relegation battle in the Premier League this season if they cash in on him.
