Everton have been heavily linked with a move for Harry Winks this summer, and now an update has been revealed by a reliable source on the club's progress of getting a deal done for the player.

What's the latest?

In the latest episode of Sky Sports podcast Transfer Talk, journalist Dharmesh Sheth claims Everton remain keen on signing Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Winks this summer.

Sheth claimed:

“They’re also trying to sign Harry Winks from Tottenham.

“But the deal that they’re interested in is a loan with an option [to buy], so they don’t commit big sums of money.

“It could be a while, I think, before Everton are in that market again when they’re going for those big-name players for big sums of money.”

Arteta 2.0

Now that pre-season has begun Frank Lampard will be keen to get in new recruits as soon as possible to get a better idea of the work that needs to be done in the squad and where his best assets for next season lie, and Winks could definitely be a great addition to the team.

Everton struggled massively last season only surviving relegation in their penultimate game of the Premier League campaign, so the Toffees boss will be desperate to improve and add depth to his squad ahead of their return to action next month.

With Donny van de Beek's loan spell over and Fabian Delph's contract expiration there is definitely room in the heart of Everton's team for Winks to earn much more game time at Goodison Park compared to the lack of opportunities he gets at Spurs and could even become the club's next Mikel Arteta in midfield.

Like the former midfielder turned Arsenal boss, Winks plays a mostly central and defensive role in the centre of the pitch, and if Lampard can get the best from him and offer consistent game-time to the boyhood Spurs gem, there is no reason why he can't follow in the footsteps of Arteta on Merseyside, offering metronomic qualities in the middle.

The £20m midfield maestro has been the recipient of high praise, as former goal-keeper Paul Robinson claimed Winks "dominates" the game when he plays;

“For me, I think Harry Winks is one of the best of the bunch. He dominates the game, defensively and offensively he offers you both and his ball retention, the stats speak for themselves.”

With that being said, Kevin Thelwell should be doing all that he can to negotiate a deal with the powers at Tottenham Hotspur, as Winks' input next season could make a huge difference to the quality of Everton's midfield going forward.
