Everton given green light to sign Dwight McNeil

Everton have had a slow start to their transfer window with only one signing made so far this summer, but they may now have been given the green light to make their second signing of the off-season.

What’s the latest?

According to The Evening Standard, Burnley are now ready to cash in on Toffees transfer target Dwight McNeil.

As per the report, Everton are joined by Aston Villa, West Ham United and Crystal Palace in being named among clubs interested in signing the midfielder this summer, and the Clarets are ready to sell one of their star players after dropping back into the Championship following six top-flight campaigns.

It would be a huge coup

It is no secret that Everton seriously struggled last season in the Premier League after getting into a relegation battle at the bottom of the table, so Frank Lampard will be desperate to add reinforcements into his squad who can bring quality, talent and a positive influence.

Despite being relegated on the final day of the season with Burnley, McNeil has been a consistent and reliable performer who has been a standout in the team, so it is no wonder that Everton and a whole host of other top-flight clubs are vying to sign the player.

Over 38 appearances last term, the 22-year-old delivered one assist and created six big chances, making 1.3 key passes and 2.1 tackles per game. He also won the majority of his duels (54%) and was successful with the majority of his dribbles (60%).

Firstly, where did Everton finish in the Premier League?

During his time with the Clarets, McNeil has racked up 134 Premier League appearances, playing predominantly on the left wing or deeper in a left midfield role. With seven goals and 17 assists in total, it is obvious that the young Englishman has been a huge presence for his current club.

As a result of his efforts and work rate, the £15m-valued attacker has been the recipient of high praise, with his team-mate Ashley Westwood once saying of McNeil (via Burnley Express): “He’s really mature. I think the world of him; he’s a special talent. It’s been good to see him grow up because when he first came training with us, he was really quiet.

“He’s already racked up more than 50 games in the Premier League now, which at his age is phenomenal. He’s producing as well, so if he keeps doing that and we all keep doing what we’re doing then there will be teams circulating.”

With that in mind, the signing of McNeil would be a huge coup for Moshiri and Lampard this summer, as he could not only continue to develop his skills at Goodison Park but provide a new attacking threat on the left following the departure of Richarlison.
