Everton eye move for Inter’s Stefan de Vrij

Everton have been linked with a transfer move for Inter defender Stefan de Vrij ahead of the upcoming January window.

What’s the story?

According to the Liverpool ECHO (who cite 90min), the Toffees are one of three Premier League clubs interested in securing the highly-rated 29-year-old’s signature, with Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur also listed as potential suitors.

The original report states that De Vrij has been offered to the Magpies after their recent takeover and could be available for a discounted price due to his contract having just 18 months left to run.

However, Everton and Spurs are also keen to prise him away from cash-strapped Inter, although the centre-back’s sizeable wages may prove to be a stumbling block for most sides.

Do Everton need another centre-back?

Yes, definitely!

Yes, definitely!

No way!

No way!

Rafa Benitez needs him

After keeping just three clean sheets in all competitions this season, it’s clear that Benitez needs some defensive reinforcements over the winter window if he’s to guide the Blues up the top-flight table.

An injury to the in-form Yerry Mina has not helped the 61-year-old’s cause, but with the Colombia international rumoured to be edging towards the exit door, further additions will be required either way.

Therefore, a move for De Vrij would make sense for several reasons. The £45m-rated colossus has established himself as one of Europe’s top defenders in recent years, earning praise from several impressed onlookers.

One of his admirers is former Lazio teammate Mauricio, who lauded his quality to ESPN (via Football Italia), saying: “Stefan is a great defender and deserves to be at a big club. He’s very tall, he’s strong and fast, he runs a lot – he’s a monster! He’s a calm defender who never gets agitated.”

Following his switch from the Stadio Olimpico to San Siro in 2018, the Dutchman has elevated his game to new heights, though, playing a pivotal part in Inter’s first Serie A triumph in 11 years last term.

The top-flight triumph came under the tutelage of new Spurs manager Antonio Conte, who compared De Vrij to Leonardo Bonucci following a string of standout performances, and cemented his status as one of the game’s leading centre-backs.

His arrival on Merseyside would be a significant coup for Everton and one that would have the ability to transform Benitez’s recent fortunes on the pitch.
