Everton have been linked with a move for Matheus Cunha, and a new update has emerged regarding the club’s pursuit of the player ahead of the January transfer window.

What’s the latest?

According to 90min, the Toffees have made contact with the representatives of the Atletico Madrid forward.

As per the report, there are several Premier League clubs interested in acquiring the services of the player in the January transfer window, including Wolverhampton Wanderers, Aston Villa and Leeds United.

It is claimed that Atletico are desperate to offload Cunha’s wages at the club and would even be willing to accept a loan deal, which has duly sparked the interest of a number of clubs including Everton.

It could be a big risk

Frank Lampard will be concerned ahead of Everton’s return to action in the Premier League after Christmas, as his side are currently teetering on the edge of the relegation zone once again.

The Toffees are currently 17th in the table after a run of poor form and performances which has left them just one point clear of the bottom three, with only Wolves scoring fewer goals over the top-flight campaign so far.

Lampard will be given a golden opportunity to strengthen his attacking threat during the transfer window next month, and in turn hopefully improve the conversion rate of goal-scoring opportunities to help Everton climb the table into safer environs.

However, the chase for Cunha could lead the former Chelsea boss into more trouble, as the 44-year-old needs a striker who is in great form and can make an instant positive impact on the team.

The £42m-priced Brazilian striker - who was dubbed “unpredictable” by his former boss Maurizio Jacobacci - has failed to score a single goal this season so far in 11 La Liga appearances.

In fact, Cunha has only scored seven goals in 54 appearances for Atletico since joining them in 2021, with a goal scored every 255 minutes or one for every 7.7 games played.

Along with a lack of Premier League experience, the striker’s inconsistent output in the final third would not likely help Everton much in their pursuit to improve their finishing in front of goal.

With that in mind, it could be a big risk and ultimately a waste of money for Everton to sign Cunha, so it would be wise for Lampard to look at other potential striker targets who are in better form and more likely to provide a steady supply of goals over the second half of the season.
