Everton confident of Morgan Gibbs-White deal

Everton are believed to have renewed hope of signing Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder, Morgan Gibbs-White, according to recent reports.

What’s the word?

As per Football Insider, the Toffees are said to be ‘confident’ of landing the 22-year-old before the window slams shut in September, despite having reportedly seen a bid of around £25m rejected earlier this summer.

The report suggests that those at Goodison Park have been ‘encouraged’ that a deal could go ahead due to the Englishman’s desire to make the move to Merseyside, as well as Wolves’ need for funds.

Frank Lampard and co will face competition for his signature, however, with Nottingham Forest also firmly in the race, the newly-promoted side having seen a £35m offer rebuffed last week.

Imagine him and Onana

It would appear then that it could take as much as £40m to land the playmaker in the coming weeks, with Bruno Lage seemingly fearful of losing such a highly-rated talent for free later down the road, with just two years left on his existing deal.

The right offer could well tempt the Old Gold into a sale, with it set to prove a notable coup if the Merseysiders are able to land the hugely “exciting” prospect – as dubbed by Andy Naylor.

The former England U17, World Cup winner has made just 48 Premier League appearances for his current side over the last few years, despite making his senior debut back in 2017, although showcased his quality with a stunning loan spell at Sheffield United last term.

That breakthrough season at Brammall Lane saw the electric “sensation” – as previously described by Mike McGrath – score 11 goals and provide nine assists in 35 league games for the Championship outfit

An “instrumental” figure for the Blades, in the words of ex-teammate Billy Sharp, the versatile midfielder now appears more than ready to make his mark back in the top tier, with it no real surprise that there is such clamour for his signature.

His arrival at Goodison could also see Lampard form a hugely menacing midfield duo alongside summer signing Amadou Onana, with the towering Belgian set to provide the defensive steel to complement Gibbs-White’s attacking flair.

Firstly, where did Everton finish in the Premier League?

A robust, physical presence in the centre of the park, Onana impressed at former club Lille last season, notably averaging 1.5 tackles per game from his 32 league outings, ensuring he ranks in the top 5% among those in his position across Europe’s big five leagues, in that metric.

With the midfield having been criticised for its “lack of athleticism” last season by Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher – who notably suggested Allan “can’t run” – the addition of two young and hungry assets such as Onana and Gibbs-White would surely alleviate such concerns.

Having already lost two from two in the league thus far, further incomings will no doubt be needed if Everton are to stave off the drop, with Gibbs-White seemingly an ideal addition who will only progress in the years to come.
