Everton: Simon Johnson drops Idrissa Gueye update

Everton have made an offer in an attempt to bring Idrissa Gueye back to Goodison Park on transfer deadline day.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by Simon Johnson, who revealed in a recent post on Twitter that the Toffees have launched a late offer for the Paris Saint-Germain defensive midfielder.

However, The Athletic journalist went on to state that, at this stage, a deal for the 32-year-old looks unlikely, although did suggest that anything can happen on transfer deadline day.

In his tweet, Johnson said: “It’s true that Everton have made a move to re-sign their former midfielder Idrissa Gueye from PSG. But was told last night that it was unlikely to happen. Things can always change though on deadline day.”

Would Gueye be a good signing for Everton?

Lampard would love it

While it is true that Frank Lampard does have a number of options available in the middle of the park at present, aside from Abdoulaye Doucoure, the vast majority of the Toffees’ central midfielders have been well below-par so far this season, something that would appear to suggest the 43-year-old manager could do with a much more reliable option in the position.

And, considering just how impressive Gueye has been for PSG this term, the Senegal international would very much appear to be an addition to Lampard’s current midfield options at Goodison that the former Chelsea manager would love.

Indeed, over his 15 Ligue 1 outings in the current campaign, the £11.7m-rated man has scored three goals and created two big chances for his teammates, as well as making an average of 0.9 interceptions, 2.7 tackles, 0.8 key passes, 54.3 total passes and winning 4.9 duels per game.

These returns have seen the £99k-per-week terrier average a rather remarkable SofaScore match rating of 7.17 in the French top-flight – something that would rank the 32-year-old not only as Everton’s best performing midfielder but their second-best player overall this season.

As such, while Johnson claims that a deal for Gueye looks unlikely at present, it would appear highly advisable for Lampard to do all he can to get the transfer of the midfielder over the line on Monday, as the Senegalese sensation would very much appear to possess the grit and determination that has been so desperately lacking in the Toffees midfield so far this season.
