Everton remain interested in signing Maxwel Cornet

Everton secured the signing of Burnley winger Dwight McNeil on Thursday, but their raid of Turf Moor doesn’t seem to be over yet, with a new update emerging on a potential transfer target from the Clarets.

What’s the latest?

According to BBC journalist Fraser Fletcher, the Toffees remain interested in signing Maxwel Cornet, despite securing a deal for another of Burnley’s forwards over the last couple of days.

Fletcher tweeted: “Everton still trying to get Maxwel Cornet. They are up against it with Nottingham Forest, Fulham and one unamed club for Cornet but McNeil is not ‘instead of’ Cornet.”

It would be a big coup

Frank Lampard is in desperate need of fresh perspectives and talented players in his Everton squad following a difficult relegation battle last season, and signing Cornet would be a big coup in their efforts to strengthen their forward line.

Despite the Merseyside club’s struggles last term, Richarlison was a shining light to keep the Toffees from tumbling into the Championship, scoring six goals over the final 10 games of the campaign which led to their survival in the penultimate game of the season. Ironically, it was Cornet’s Burnley who suffered as a result, as it was they who finished 18th and dropped out of the top flight.

The Brazilian winger has now left the club in a £60m move to Tottenham Hotspur, so the need for forwards who can replace his work ethic and goal contributions is desperately needed at Goodison Park ahead of the new season.

Firstly, where did Everton finish in the Premier League?

Over 26 league appearances in 2021/22, Cornet scored nine goals, delivered one assist and created two big chances, taking 1.8 shots and winning 2.8 duels per game as he proved that he could be a valuable asset in Lampard’s efforts to bolster his front line for the upcoming season.

Although Burnley struggled last time around, it didn’t stop the 25-year-old Ivorian from receiving high praise, with former England international Owen Hargreaves claiming of the forward: “He is a fabulous goalscorer and probably one of the signings of the season so far.

“At £12m, it feels like a snip. He gives them something different, he can be direct, can play on the shoulder and is a fabulous finisher, probably better than anyone anticipated and he has been terrific for Sean Dyche.”

If Farhad Moshiri can reach an agreement to pay the £17.5m release clause in Cornet’s contract, it would appear to be a great piece of business for Everton in their pursuit to compete comfortably in the Premier League in 2022/23.
