Tonight, Wayne Rooney returns to Wembley for one last time as England fans get to thank him for his service in a friendly against USA.

Rooney, 33, will pick up his 120th cap taking him just five appearances away from Peter Shilton's all-time record.

After making his England debut in 2003 against Australia, Rooney's career has been a whirlwind filled with ups and downs.

We take a look through his incredible career that has seen him play in four World Cups, three European Championships and scoring 53 goals for his country.

Here are Rooney's best and worst moments.

First Premier League Goal

Rooney announced himself to the world five days before his 17th birthday by scoring the winner against Arsenal in October 2002.

"Remember the name, WAYNE ROONEY!"

England Debut

In February 2003, after just a handful of Premier League appearances, Rooney made his England debut at Upton Park.

Coming on as a substitute against Australia, he was unable to help England as they lost 3-1 in the friendly.

At 17 years and 111 days, he became the youngest player to ever play for the senior national team.

First England Goal

Seven months later, playing in the European Championships qualifying Rooney scored his first goal for England against Macedonia.

He is still the youngest player to have scored a goal for England (17 years and 317 days).

First Tournament Goal

After impressing in the qualifying campaign, Rooney was named in the squad for Euro 2004, in which some believe was his only good international tournament.

He was named in UEFA's team of the tournament after scoring four goals in his four appearances.

Move To Man United

After impressing with Everton and England, it was no surprise clubs came knocking and in 2004, he submitted a transfer request and signed for Sir Alex Ferguson's Manchester United for £26.5 million.

It was the highest fee paid for an under-20 year old at the time, he was given the no.8 shirt.

Man United Debut Hat-Trick

Rooney made his debut against Fenerbahce in the Champions League and made an incredible impact.

He scored an inspired hat-trick and provided an assist as United ran out 6-2 winners.

Metatarsal

For the second World Cup running, the word 'metatarsal' was the most used as England once again waited on the fitness of one of their star men.

Just weeks before the start of the 2006 World Cup in Germany, Rooney suffered the break in a Premier League game at Stamford Bridge after a challenge from Portugal's Paulo Ferreira.

Rooney Race To Fitness

The whole nation waited to hear if Rooney would be fit for the World Cup and many believe he really shouldn't have gone.

He was named in the squad but would definitely miss the first game against Paraguay.

Portugal Sending Off

Rooney's race back to fitness was in vein as Paulo Ferreira's Portugal would end England's dreams of glory.

The United striker was sent-off for stamping on Chelsea man Ricardo Carvalho, but it was largely thanks to Portugal's protests lead by Cristiano Ronaldo that saw him see red.

Many believe had Rooney stayed on the field, England would have gone on to win the game and a semi-final spot.

Euro 2008 Qualification

The Euro 2008 qualifying campaign will last long in the memory for all the wrong reasons.

Rooney missed the crucial last game at Wembley against Croatia with another foot injury sustained playing for United.

Own Fans Booing

2010- another World Cup, another disappointment for Rooney and England.

After being jeered off the pitch by England fans, Rooney ranted to the cameras “Nice to see your home fans booing you. That’s loyal supporters.”

Infidelity Claims

It was a summer to forget for Rooney as allegations of infidelity surfaced in August 2010.

Prostitute Helen Wood claimed that she and Jennifer Thompson were paid £1,000 by Rooney to have a threesome with him in a Manchester hotel.

Volley Against City

Although his personal life was dominating the papers, in 2011 Rooney made sure that he would do his talking on the pitch.

An incredible Derby game against Man City was finished off by a ridiculous overhead volley from the United man.

Rooney helps his team to win the Premier League, his fourth.

Euro 2012 Qualification

After failing to qualify for Euro 2008, four years later England breezed through their qualification group and went into the last game knowing they were heading to the Ukraine and Poland.

However, Rooney received a red card for a kick-out, meaning he would miss the start of the tournament.

The FA appealed a three match ban and successfully reduced it to two.

Euro 2012

With Rooney banned for the first two games, England went in to the final group game against Ukraine needing a win to qualify.

In a cagey game, the United man was on hand to nod home from close range to give England a 1-0 win.

After making a handful appearances as captain before, Rooney was named England's official captain by Roy Hodgson in 2014.

Rooney said at the time: "It is something I will take massive pride in doing. To be appointed captain is beyond my wildest dreams.

First World Cup Goal

Despite playing in the 2006 and 2010 World Cup, it wasn't until 2014 that Rooney grabbed his first and only goal for England in the world's biggest football tournament.

His goal against Uruguay couldn't help England out of the group stages.

Knock-Out

In 2015, it was Rooney's boxing that was grabbing the headlines, not his football.

Reports in the newspapers of him being knocked out by former United player Phil Bardsley in a boxing match in his kitchen circulated.

In United's next game, Rooney celebrated his goal in comedic fashion.

Record Goalscorer

During qualification for Euro 2016, Rooney scores his 50th goal for England, becoming the first player to reach a half century of goals for his nation.

Rooney surpasses Sir Bobby Charlton with a penalty against Switzerland.

Retirement

In August 2017, despite Gareth Southgate wanting him in the squad for the end of World Cup 2018 qualifying stages, Rooney having moved back to Everton decided to retire from international football.

He said:

"It was great Gareth Southgate called me this week to tell me he wanted me back in the England squad for the upcoming matches. I really appreciated that.

"However, having already thought long and hard, I told Gareth that I had now decided to retire for good from international football."

Drink Driving Charge

Just weeks after his announcement, Rooney was arrested by Cheshire police after being caught drink-driving.

He pleaded guilty to the charge three weeks later and was given a twelve month community order and banned from driving for two years.

Turned Down Ireland

Before he made his international debut, Rooney was approached by the Republic of Ireland at the age of 16.

Thanks to having an Irish grandmother, the striker was eligible to play for the Republic of Ireland.
