Last season this was a Championship fixture, and Watford’s victory over Forest in April helped them on their way to promotion.
But what a difference a few months can make in football. That Watford victory was masterminded by Slavisa Jokanovic, but today it will be Quique Sanchez Flores who looks to avoid a banana skin against a lower league side.
Watford will now take their place as favourites for this game, with the likes of Odion Ighalo and Troy Deeney looking to keep their wonderful form going and propel Watford to an unlikely cup run, reminiscent of the 1980s.
Forest, meanwhile, are a long way from the team they were in the 80s. But that’s the great thing about the FA Cup: it’s a time for sepia-toned nostalgia, and also a time when you can look forward with hope. A win today over Watford would certainly be an FA Cup upset, but for Dougie Freedman’s Forest, it could be the start of a return to where they were a few decades ago as they look to push for a play-off spot this season.
