Manchester United's trip to Liverpool on Saturday hardly produced a classic; in fact, it laid down a very strong, very early case for the Premier League's worst game of the season.

Nonetheless, it would be unfair to ignore some good performances just because they weren't particularly exciting ones and for what the Red Devils failed to provide in entertainment, they certainly made up for in resilience, defensive sturdiness and organisation.

Indeed, Liverpool have one of the most feared attacks in Europe when in top gear but barring a typically decent start from the Merseysiders who always begin matches in a full-blooded manner, they continually failed to break United's backline.

That was partly due to the protection Ander Herrera and Nemanja Matic provided in midfield, the former making a whopping nine tackles, although Liverpool did manage to force an exceptional save from David De Gea - the goalkeeper stretching to shut out a shot with his toe.
