With a number of big names unavailable through injury, the coming international break represents a chance for a bunch of midfielders to really stake a claim for themselves in Gareth Southgate’s plans.

In the absence of Dele Alli and Jesse Lingard, chief amongst those are Ross Barkley and James Maddison – seemingly natural fits for the roaming No.8 roles in England’s midfield, but far from Three Lions regulars throughout Southgate’s tenure.

But after being outclassed by Spain last time out in the Nations League, some would prefer to see Southgate take a more pragmatic approach and only deploy one attack-minded midfielder when England play Croatia on Friday night.

With that in mind, we asked fans earlier this week whether Barkley, Maddison or both should start in the Balkans and our poll has revealed that 70% want the Chelsea ace on the pitch in some form, whether that’s without Maddison or partnering him.

The Leicester attacking midfielder, meanwhile, could only muster up a backing of 30% to start the game without Barkey alongside him.
