Few managers in world football tinker their sides with the regularity of Pep Guardiola, who seems to make at least one change per match almost as a point of principle. And after requiring stoppage time to beat Bournemouth prior to the international break, the Manchester City gaffer looks almost certain to shake things up for Liverpool’s visit to the Etihad Stadium this Saturday. In contrast, the Reds’ last result was a 4-0 demolition job over Arsenal.
But perhaps the biggest question Guardiola faces ahead of the weekend is which defensive foundation to build the rest of his side upon, having fluctuated between two different shapes of backline already this season. City used a flat back four against Bournemouth, but called upon three centre-backs in the win over Brighton and the draw with Everton.
Accordingly, we asked City fans earlier this week to vote for which setup Guardiola should use this weekend and our poll showed that supporters are relatively divided on the issue; while three at the back claimed 53% of the vote, four at the back still took 47%.
