It has been almost four years since Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard retired from international football but England are still no closer to compiling an elite midfield.
Roy Hodgson experimented with a number of options, before throwing together a 4-3-3 with Eric Dier, Wayne Rooney and Dele Alli in the engine room for Euro 2016; a combination that had not been tried prior to that opening game with Russia.
It looks as if Gareth Southgate will use a central midfield duo in Russia, as part of a 3-4-2-1 formation. In that setup, it is the wing-backs who push on and provide the support for the front three, while the midfield pair sit deep and protect the central defensive trio.
Even allowing for that, the combination of Eric Dier and Jordan Henderson that was largely used throughout qualifying was distinctly uninspiring, offering more perspiration than inspiration.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who moved to Anfield to get more gametime in the centre of the park, came out on top of the poll, and most fans want him to be partnered by his club captain Jordan Henderson.

Check out the full results of the poll below, which does not make good reading for Dier or his North London rival Jack Wilshere…
