PL25: Manchester United’s five greatest Premier League goals

Seeing as it’s the international break and we’re all missing Premier League football as England once again bore us to tears, Football FanCast have decided to take a look back at some of the best goals that Manchester United have scored during the Premier League era.

Selecting a top ten would be difficult considering the likes of Ryan Giggs, Eric Cantona, David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo, Paul Scholes and Wayne Rooney have played for the Red Devils since the inauguration of the division in 1992, but we have made it even more difficult for ourselves by trying to narrow it down to a top five.

Now we want you to decide which is your favourite United strike from the the last 25-and-a-bit years, so give our selections a watch and then have your say on which is the best…

Option A – David Beckham vs Wimbledon

There was nothing remarkable about Manchester United’s meeting with Wimbledon at Selhurst Park in 1996, until Beckham recieved the ball in his own half and looked up that is.

But rather than looking to pick out a teammate with a forward pass, the midfielder showed his awareness by noticing that Dons goalkeeper Neil Sullivan was off of his line.

Attempting to score from the halfway line was still audacious even in the circumstances, but Beckham decided to go for it and as Sullivan back-peddled, the ball flew over him and hit the back of the net.

It was the goal that announced Beckham on to the football scene.

Option B – Wayne Rooney vs Newcastle United

It was less than a year after he made the move to Old Trafford from Everton, but Rooney scored one of the best goals of his 13-year career with the Red Devils when they hosted Newcastle United in April 2005.

The goal has even more of a story behind it as the striker was arguing with the referee just seconds before. But after a long ball forward was headed just outside of penalty area by a Magpies defender, Rooney hit the ball full on the volley and it flew past Shay Given.

Option C – Paul Scholes vs Aston Villa

The midfielder is undoubtedly one of United’s best ever players, and he showed his quality in a Premier League clash against Aston Villa at Villa Park in December 2006.

Already leading 1-0, Ryan Giggs’ corner was headed high into the air and out of the penalty area by a Villa defender and the hosts would have been confident that the danger was gone.

However, Scholes met the ball full on the volley and crashed a 25-yard effort in via the crossbar in what was an outstanding showcase of his technical ability.

Option D – Wayne Rooney vs Manchester City

The Manchester derby is always a special occasion for fans of both clubs but the meeting between the two at Old Trafford in February 2011 looked to be heading towards a draw before Nani picked the ball up on the wing and sent a cross into the penalty area.

Rooney was waiting in the middle of the box but when the ball in took a slight deflection, he had to adjust his body for an overhead kick rather than a header. After leaping five yards in the air, he made the sweetest connection with the ball to send it flying into the top corner past a helpless Joe Hart.

A special goal.

Option E – Robin van Persie vs Villa

The striker enjoyed great success in his three seasons with the Red Devils and one of his best moments came in a home clash against Villa at Old Trafford in April 2013.

Rooney picked the ball up in his own half and after taking a look up, he hit an inch-perfect diagonal ball towards the edge of the penalty area.

At this stage Van Persie was running to try and meet the ball and he couldn’t have made a purer connection as he sent a thumping first-time volley into the far corner.
