EA Sports’s FIFA football video game series has revolutionised competitive gaming. With more than 100 million copies sold, FIFA is the highest selling sports video game series of all-time.
FIFA International Soccer was released in late 1993. It was the first football game to have an official license from FIFA, the world governing body of football, and featured footballer David Platt on the cover. The game only had national teams and didn’t use real player names. As the only football game on the market, the game was an immediate success in the UK.
Since 1993, a new edition has been released every year. The game has evolved to include 14 different football leagues, complete with player and team names. It is now available in 18 languages in more than 50 countries. Also, FIFA is now available for Windows, Xbox 360, Xbox 360 Kinect, Playstation 3, PSP, Wii, Wii U, Nintendo 3ds, PSV, Mobile Phone, and IOS. FIFA 2012 sold approximately 3.3 million copies in one week and holds the record as the fastest selling sports game ever.
Recent editions have focused on online gameplay. According to the FIFA 13 manual, the Ultimate team features a “massive online community of football fans from around the globe, building their own dream squads and competing in Tournaments, Seasons, and in our global Auction Market for players.” In this game mode, gamers must keep track of player contracts and fitness, while maintaining good club chemistry and morale. Other game modes include Career, Season, and regular online head-to-head competition.
FIFA 14 will be released in September 2013.
