An important signing for Rafa, or another crock he could do without?

Football FanCast columnist Rob Facey wonders whether Arjen Robben is the answer to Liverpool's early season woes?

Liverpool are being linked with a move for Real Madrid's Arjen Robben, according to reports.

The former Chelsea star is one of a handful of players thought to be available for transfer from Spain after a summer of upheaval at the Bernabeu with the Merseysiders thought to be sniffing around.

Man United, long admirers of the Dutch international, were also monitoring him over the summer but have been put off by the £18m price tag, meaning that Liverpool have moved into pole position, according to The Daily Mail.

Even if Liverpool were to get the price down – at £18m it is way too high – it seems an odd move for Benitez to make right now.

Did he ever really address the problem of the wings at Anfield? Does this mean that Babel and Riera are not the answer after all? If not, then why was a winger not top of his priorities earlier in the summer?

If Rafa wanted Robben, why did he not include him in the Alonso deal to ensure that he was at Anfield for the start of the season?

It seems odd that he would move for the player now – or have two defeats sparked a change in approach for the rest of the year?

He has a week to go if he is to improve his squad, but surely this would be a rash move. Robben, an undoubted talent, fell out with numerous players at Madrid and the last thing Liverpool need now is somebody that may disrupt the squad harmony, or has an injury record like his.

They need to be pulling together to ensure that they never lose another game all season. And that is a tough ask. The two they have already lost may mean that the title is out of reach after all.

They need to ensure that draws are turned into wins and in his defence; Robben is a player capable of changing a game.

So, is he a necessity if Liverpool want to challenge for the title, or an expensive crock that the club could do without?
