It was heartbreak for Rio Ferdinand last Friday. The England captain was cruelly ruled out of the 2010 World Cup due to a knee injury, with Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard getting the armband and Tottenham’s Michael Dawson taking Rio’s place in the squad. The Manchester United defender suffered knee ligament damage in training after a tackle from Aston Villa’s Emile Heskey. England manager Fabio Capello was clearly disappointed but refused to blame Heskey saying “it was an accidental injury in training.” The Villa striker hasn’t exactly shown his worth to the squad thus far, but maybe he can redeem himself with a World Cup winning goal, we can dream! Here’s Ferdinand and Heskey all-smiles on the England bench in the practice match against the Platinum Stars and it appears Rio’s not bearing any grudges, but what’s he really thinking behind that wry smile?
