Beckham will be out to scalp his old employers

When David Beckham left Old Trafford in 2003, it was more than obvious that it was not the end of his Manchester United story.

Having signed schoolboy forms on his 14th birthday, Beckham carved out a career on Man United’s right wing and at the same time became a superstar whose fame stretched beyond the beautiful game.

After some clashes between himself and manager Sir Alex Ferguson, in what would be his final season things finally began to properly sour with Fergie striking Beckham in the face with a boot following defeat to Arsenal in the FA Cup and Beckham losing his place to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on the right wing.

But when David Beckham left Old Trafford that summer, it was more than obvious he would be back.

Man United is still a club in Beckham’s heart this was more than evident last season as he appeared at the Emirates to watch United trounce Arsenal in the CL semi final, looking happy as a school kid as United did so.

So when the draw for the first knockout stage of the Champions League in December announced that Beckham’s AC Milan would be facing Manchester United it immediately grabbed the headlines. Beckham himself announced that he was close to tears upon hearing the news and has since revealed his regret at leaving Man United,

"I'd have loved to have stayed at United for my whole career and never gone anywhere else...I’ve got a great rapport with the fans, the staff there and the manager, it was the club I always wanted to play for and it is my dream club. I still miss being a United player.”

Beckham has played out most of his career under the intense media spotlight and when he returns to Old Trafford, with his last CL performance on the ground in mind (He came off the bench and almost rescued United against future employers Real Madrid scoring a brace) it would be the perfect opportunity for him to yet again steal the headlines. He is no fool and as much as he loves United, he is a professional and sentiment won’t come before success,

“The biggest thing is that I am going back with AC Milan. It will be a special night, but it’s business. It’s difficult for me to think about knocking out United. But I won’t like it if we lose, so I’m going to have to be professional.”

So amidst all the soft weepy stuff and memories being drummed up in the media about his return to the Theatre of Dreams on March 10th and even his own utterances, don’t expect Beckham to take any prisoners as I certainly won’t!
