Egyptian striker Mohamed Zidan is reportedly being chased by a host of top European clubs, including Manchester United, Arsenal and Barcelona, according to the player’s father.

Abdullah Zidan told Egyptian channel Dream TV that “Arsenal, Manchester United and Barcelona have talked to Mohamed’s agent.” The Borussia Dortmund striker, who scored one goal and set up countless others in Egypt’s third successive African Cup of Nations win, reportedly has a clause in his contract which allows him to complete a move to any of these clubs at the end of the season.

Zidan has spent most of his career in the Bundesliga: with stints at Werder Bremen, Mainz, Hamburg and Borussia Dortmund. The Egyptian striker, 28, has scored 9 goals in 45 games for Dortmund, with 2 goals in 13 starts this season for the German club. Zidan has made 33 appearances for Egypt, scoring 7 goals for the reigning African Cup of Nations champions.

This rumour could just be Zidan’s father trying to drum up interest in his son; but would the Egyptian be good enough for an Arsenal or a Man United? If he came to England, he would join compatriots Amr Zaki and Mido in the Premiership. Those are two players who started well in England but faded quickly: Mido started well when on loan at Tottenham, but struggled at stints at Middlesborough and Wigan. Zaki was in excellent form in the first part of last season at Wigan, scoring 10 goals at the DW stadium, before falling out with then-Wigan boss Steve Bruce, who described Zaki as the most unprofessional player he had ever worked with.

Injuries have blighted Zidan’s time in Germany, especially whilst at Werder Bremen, at a time where a host of European clubs were interested in signing the striker. Personally, I do not believe signing an injury-prone 28 year old is what Arsenal and United need, and 2 goals so far this season for Dortmund do not arise much hope that Zidan could cut it at a top four club. He may be able to make an impact at a club in the bottom half of the Premiership, but I cannot see the likes of Van Persie, Rooney, Berbatov and Arshavin looking over their shoulder and worrying about the Egyptian taking their place at their respective clubs next season.

What do you think? Is Zidan good enough to play for a top-four side?
