Manchester City could be set to make an audacious bid to sign former Arsenal legend Thierry Henry from Barcelona, according to the Daily Mail. With Barca manager Pep Guardiola targeting Bayern Munich’s Franck Ribery and Valencia’s David Silva to fill Henry’s spot on the left-side attacking role, Henry could be deemed surplus to requirements at the Nou Camp.

Since signing for Barcelona in 2007 for £16 million, Henry has enjoyed mixed fortunes at the Nou Camp. Initially frustrated with being deployed on the left wing, Henry struggled early on at Barca, but managed to score 19 goals last year in the Catalan club’s treble-winning season. But injuries have dogged Henry this season, with the Frenchman only scoring twice in 13 games.

Henry has one year left on his contract after this season, and it is speculated that Barcelona would be willing to sell the 32 year old in the summer. With City rumoured to be one of the clubs interested in securing the services of the mercurial Frenchman, it begs the question: can Thierry Henry still cut it in the Premier League?

He may not be the most popular player in England right now, because of the handball that broke Irish hearts in November, but a lot of teams would love to have the talents of Henry in their side. While I can imagine Arsenal would probably welcome him back with open arms: as he still has legendary status at the club and is arguably one of their greatest player ever – would Henry be the same player for a team like City that he was at Arsenal?

I believe Henry is not the same player he once was. While still capable of providing moments of brilliance, he is not the world-beater he once was and cannot guarantee a team 30 goals a season anymore. If he moved to City, he would be a bit-part player, beneath the likes of Carlos Tevez and Emmanuel Adebayor in the pecking order and would be used as an impact sub on the left wing, at the position where Craig Bellamy is excelling for Man City this season.

Therefore, I believe that moving to Eastlands would be a mistake for both Henry and City. Henry would tarnish his excellent legacy in the Premiership by warming the City’s bench, and Man City don’t need Henry, with all the attacking talent they have at their disposal. Man City will undoubtedly spend big in the summer and bolster their already impressive strikeforce. There is no need to spend big money and big wages on a once-great Frenchman.

What do you think? Would Henry fit in at Man City or any other Premiership team?
