This summer’s World Cup will have the club’s going crazy. As with every big tournament, club scouts and managers from across the World will be searching for that undiscovered talent or super signing. Just a word of warning, as this list shows, not every player who shines will necessarily do so for the rest of his career. Here is my list of the top 5 post-tournament flops.

El Hadji Diouf

After terrorising the French defence in the opening game of the 2002 World Cup. Diouf was already guaranteed a big money move. Up stepped Liverpool to sign the striker for £10million from Pas-de-Calais. Gerard Houllier opted for the Senegalese forward ahead of Nicolas Anelka (oops). After spitting his way to Bolton and Sunderland, Diouf is now ‘lighting up’ Ewood Park...with his yellow Mohawk!

Khalid Boulahrouz

After impressing at the 2006 World Cup, Boulahrouz joined Chelsea for a fee in the region of £8.5million. He made just 23 appearances for Jose Mourinho’s side and, after being dropped on his rear end by Robbie Keane, he was shipped off the sunny Sevilla.

Salif Diao

The Senegal midfielder may have only cost a fraction of the price The Red’s paid for Diouf but he was just as much of a flop as his international team-mate. A strong performance in the World Cup was enough to convince Houllier of his worth but 37 appearances in 4 seasons was not what the Liverpool fans were expecting. Recently stepped to a new low after putting the dagger into an already wounded Pompey but that’s another matter all together.

Kleberson

Big Phil Scolari suggested that he was the driving force behind Brazil’s World Cup success in 2002. Bearing in mind that was a team which contained Cafu, Ronaldinho, Ronaldo and Rivaldo then it is no wonder Sir Alex Ferguson splashed out 6.5million on the little midfielder. After a few games the United faithful realised that Big Alex had made a big mistake. 20 appearances for United was enough to see him flogged to Turkey for a mere £2.5million.

Roman Pavlyuchenko

One of the best players of Euro 2008, Pav helped Russia to the semi-finals with 3 goals and had the big boys asking for his signature. The Russian chose Tottenham and it has been down-hill ever since. Unlike the others, this may be more a case of lack of opportunities. His cameo this weekend has shown that he is more than capable of scoring goals but ‘Arry Redknapp's love affair with Crouch and Defoe seems eternal and £14million for 7 goals is hardly a success.
