Klaas-Jan-Huntelaar

Harry Redknapp is normally one for denying any speculation when a player is directly linked to the club, however when asked the question about Ruud van Nistelrooy he conceded that he was actually keen on the Dutchman. Whether it was the fact he was caught out with the player’s agent that made him hold his hands up is uncertain, but it does appear the purpose of the dinner was to discuss the possibility of a move.

I have to confess that as much as I admire Van Nistelrooy as a striker, I do find the link rather a strange one and question whether he is the type of striker that we actually need. Yes he would come to Tottenham and will arguably score goals, but is he the ideal partner for Jermain Defoe? If Defoe is out injured then it will be a dream to have Ruud to call upon, however as a striking duo, I’m not so sure.

For all of Ruud’s goalscoring abilities, I would rather that Redknapp went back to one of his summer targets Klass Jan Huntelaar. The Milan striker has admitted today that he needs to leave Italy in order to play regular football, so he can secure his place in the Dutch World Cup squad. Huntelaar has claimed that he would rather a loan move, for the simple reason that he feels he has unfinished business in Milan and is determined to prove himself there. In my view Huntelaar has more to his game than goals and therefore would be a far better foil for Jermain Defoe, given he can play the role as a target man, or as an out and out front man on his own.

Huntelaar would provide Redknapp with options upfront and as a loan deal it hardly represents a risk. I just feel Huntelaar could fit straight into the team where Ruud may need some adjusting alongside another out and out frontman like Defoe. Given our excellent form this season, it is vital we maintain our shape and set-up, as a big change could upset the mix.

Would Spurs fans welcome Van Nistelrooy to the Lane, or do you agree with my view that Huntelaar will be a far more natural partner for Defoe?
